Rising alone from the open desert, the old watchtower near Falaj Al Mualla is one of Umm Al Quwain's most striking and photogenic landmarks. Falaj Al Mualla is a historic inland oasis, long known for its date plantations and fortifications, and this lone tower — set against nothing but sand and sky — has become a favourite stop for desert drives and photographers.
The surrounding dunes are quiet and accessible, making this an easy, rewarding detour rather than a demanding expedition. It is at its most atmospheric at sunrise and sunset, when the low light turns the sand gold and the tower throws a long shadow across the desert.
Come in the cooler months from October to April, bring water and sun protection, and tread lightly — it is a piece of local heritage in a fragile desert setting. A normal car reaches the area, though the final approach over soft sand can need care.
