Al Rafisah Dam

Al Rafisah Dam sits in the rugged Hajar mountains just outside Khorfakkan on Sharjah's east coast, where a calm, emerald reservoir is hemmed in by dramatic peaks. It has become one of the east coast's most popular outdoor escapes — a place to hike the surrounding ridges, paddle a kayak or pedal boat on the water, and picnic by the lake with mountains rising on every side.

The hiking is the draw for adventurers. Trails climb from the dam into the mountains for sweeping views over the water and out toward the Gulf of Oman. The landscaped park at the base is easy and family-friendly, while the ridge routes are more demanding, so come prepared with plenty of water, sun protection and good footwear.

The cooler months from October to April are the time to visit, when the mountain air is pleasant and the light on the water is at its best. The dam is roughly two hours from Dubai via the scenic east-coast roads, making it a rewarding day trip or a stop on a Khorfakkan weekend.
