This classic desert drive sets out near Al Khatim and threads through rolling Emirati dunes toward Maleiha, with the dramatic rust-red ridge of Al Faya rising along the way. The contrast of Al Faya's deep-red sand against the paler surrounding desert is one of the most photogenic sights in the region, especially in the soft light of sunrise and sunset.
It is a favourite route for dune driving, desert photography and wild camping, taking in wide-open sand, big skies and classic Arabian scenery. The soft sand means this is a trip for a capable 4x4 and some sand-driving experience: lower your tyre pressures, keep your momentum, and never head into the dunes alone. Travel in a convoy of at least two vehicles and carry a tow rope and recovery boards.
The cooler months from October to April are the time to go, when the desert is comfortable by day and cool at night. Set out with far more water than you think you need, tell someone your plans, and carry a compressor or a plan to re-inflate your tyres before you reach tarmac.
