Zakher Lake is a tranquil man-made lake on the desert edge of Al Ain, near the Oman border, formed over the years by groundwater and agricultural runoff. Ringed by tall reeds with the Hajar mountains on the horizon, it has quietly become one of the region's best spots for birdwatching, easy fishing and relaxed lakeside camping away from the crowds.
The lake is a magnet for birdlife: flamingos, herons, egrets and dozens of migratory species stop here through the cooler months, making it a favourite for photographers and families. It is an informal, facility-free spot, so come fully self-sufficient with water, shade and everything you need, and take all your rubbish home.
The best time to visit is October to April, when temperatures are mild and the birdlife is at its richest. A normal car reaches the main areas, and it makes an easy day trip or overnight from Al Ain — roughly an hour and three-quarters from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
